Red Team Downs White in Scrimmage, 22-14

NORMAN -- The annual University of Oklahoma wrestling Red/White Scrimmage saw the Red squad down the White team by a 22-14 mark Tuesday night inside McCasland Field House.

Following the competition, OU head coach Mark Cody said some of the weight classes are still up for grabs. Even so, he shared he was impressed with the way the Sooners, both the returners and freshmen, came out and competed.

"The freshmen went out there and weren't scared, so it was very interesting," Cody explained. "In all the matches we had true freshman in they scrapped and wrestled hard. That is good to see as a coach because it shows we have a pretty bright future here with some of these guys if they keep excelling and improving.”

The first match of the evening pitted sophomore Sean Williams of the red team against freshman Ryan Millhof of the white team at 125 pounds. The match remained scoreless until Millhof started the second period with an escape before adding a takedown. Millhof went on to win by decision, 5-1, after recording 1:26 riding time.

At 133 pounds, redshirt junior and two-time All-American Cody Brewer faced freshman Jacob Rubio. Brewer caught Rubio in a fall in 3:50 to give the Red team an early 6-3 advantage.

The White team then won three-straight bouts before Red secured the last five of the night. The 141-pound bout pitted two freshmen against each other in Noah Teaney (white) and Trae Blackwell (red). Blackwell went on to win by a 5-0 decision.

It took overtime to decide the 149-pound match as junior Dryden Dennis of the White team recorded a takedown early in the sudden victory period to defeat redshirt freshman Shayne Tucker by decision, 4-2.

Redshirt senior and returning NCAA qualifier Justin DeAngelis (white) downed freshman Brock Wingbermuehle (red) at 157 pounds. DeAngelis took a commanding lead early in the first period, recording a takedown and a three-point nearfall, and never looked back as he won by a 16-1 technical fall 5:25 into the bout.

Since the summer, DeAngelis has made large strides and is capable of having a successful senior campaign where the sky is the limit, according to Cody.

For DeAngelis, he thinks the improvements have come because of his focus so far this season.

“I really focused on making wrestling a lifestyle this year and everything I have done has been focused on if it can make me better, if it can make me national champion," DeAngelis explained.

At 165 pounds, redshirt sophomore Clark Glass took on freshman Zach Walton. Walton struck first with a takedown, but Glass went on to record two escapes, two takedowns, a three-point nearfall and the riding time point to win by major decision, 10-2, for the Red team.

The next three matches featured close contests. At 174 pounds, freshman Nathan Marek topped redshirt sophomore Matt Reed in a close contest by a 7-6 decision. Next, sophomore Greg Wilson faced freshman Joel Dixon, winning by a 2-1 decision after securing the riding time point.

After recording a takedown with four seconds left in the match, freshman Andrew Dixon grabbed a victory against redshirt sophomore Brad Johnson at 197 pounds, winning by a 4-3 decision.

In the final bout of the night at heavyweight, redshirt sophomore and 2014 NCAA qualifier Ross Larson recorded a takedown, escape and 4:03 riding time to beat redshirt senior Zach Merrill by decision, 4-0.

OU starts its regular season at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1, as it hosts OCU, Baker and Shorter College in a four-team contest inside Lloyd Noble Center. The Sooners will face all three teams during the day, and admission is free.
