NORMAN, Okla. - On the strength of a second-place finish at the 2013 Big 12 Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships last weekend, the Oklahoma men's track and field team has returned to the top 25. The Sooners, after a week out of the poll, jumped seven spots and are ranked 21st in the latest United State Track and Field/Cross Country Coaches Association's weekly poll.

The Sooner women, who were not ranked in the preseason top 25, are ranked 23rd for the second consecutive week.

The OU men got additional ranking points from the strong performances of the distance runners at the conference meet. In all, four Sooners improved their times at the Big 12, boosting the points they provided for the team ranking. Patrick Casey, who won the Big 12 title in the 1,500, is ranked fourth in that event while Riley Masters is top ranked nationally.

Kevin Schwab, who won the Big 12 title in the 10,000, is currently ranked 15th. Three other Sooners joined the rankings in the 10,000 after OU student-athletes finished first, second, seventh and eighth to dominate the race at the Big 12.

OU got improved points from Waymon Storey in the 200; Ethan Baker in the 400; Nathaniel Winfrey in the 400 intermediate hurdles; Kaelean Washington in the long jump and Wayne Walls in the triple jump.

Senior Tre Lathan, who won the league title in the 110-meter hurdles, had posted a better time earlier in the season that provided points for the Sooners.

Tia Brooks, who defended her conference title in the shot put, continues to lead OU and the nation in the shot. The Sooners have the fourth- and ninth-ranked competitors in the javelin. Avione Allgood's Big 12 winning 171-3 in the javelin was a season best and helped OU's overall point total. Claire McConnell, who finished second in the heptathlon in the league meet, also gave the Sooners additional points.

Within the Midwest Region, the Sooner men rank third while the OU women are sixth.

The Sooners are working through final exams this week and will have a limited number of competitors at meets this weekend. OU's qualifiers will travel to the West Regional in Austin, Texas, May 23-25, before the NCAA Championships, which are scheduled for June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore.
