NORMAN, Okla. -- The fourth-ranked University of Oklahoma women's golf team shot a third-round 300 (+12) and dropped one spot to a three-way tie for ninth place at the 24-team NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga., with one round remaining.
OU began the third round on hole 10 of the par-72 University of Georgia Golf Course, and the squad's five golfers played the back side at 4 over par with the help of 10 birdies. The front nine was a different story, though, with the Sooners recording just one birdie and playing at +16.
Despite the rocky second half of the round, OU, at +18, is just nine shots out of third place. USC (-19) leads the tournament by 17 shots over second-place Duke. Alabama, Purdue and UCLA are tied for third place at +9. The Sooners are tied with Auburn and San Jose State, just one shot behind Tulane and three shots behind Stanford.
Defending NCAA champion Chirapat Jao-Javanil led the Sooners on Day 3 by shooting a 1-over-par 73. The junior recorded two birdies and three bogeys and is tied for 21st place out of 126 competitors at 2 over par. Jao-Javanil is 11 strokes behind individual leader Annie Park of USC.
OU senior Taylor Schmidt turned in another solid round out of the team's No. 5 position, shooting a 2-over 74. Schmidt, who tied for 21st at last year's NCAA Championships, joins Jao-Javanil in the same spot heading into the final 18 holes.
Junior Anne-Catherine Tanguay, playing in OU's No. 1 spot, carded a 3-over 75 to drop 12 spots to a tie for 40th place. Tanguay was at -1 through 11 holes before playing the last seven holes at +4.
Juniors Kaitlyn Rohrback and Emily Collins shot a 78 (+6) and 79 (+7), respectively, and are tied for 90th place.
"We have one more round to go and are only nine shots out of third place," said OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. "We need to go out there tomorrow and play golf and execute with confidence."
The Sooners tee off in Friday's final round beginning at 12:56 p.m. ET on hole 10. They will be paired with Stanford and Tulane.
Oklahoma will be attempting to claim its highest NCAA finish in school history. The best OU has done at nationals is sixth place, in both 2002 and last year.
