NORMAN, Okla. -- For the second straight day, the University of Oklahoma women's golf team shot a 3-over-par 291 at the 24-team NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga., on Wednesday. The Sooners remain in eighth place through two rounds at the par-72 University of Georgia Golf Course and have two rounds remaining.

Fourth-ranked OU trails leader USC by 22 shots, but is just four strokes outside the top five. USC shot tournament-best 12 under Wednesday and is in front of second-place Alabama by 12 shots. Alabama's Stephanie Meadows is at 8 under par through two rounds and holds a one-shot lead among a field of 126 competitors.

"We did a lot of good stuff today but made some mistakes," said OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. "We had a few doubles that hurt our score but came back and made some birdies. We have a great game plan in place and have to execute it the next couple days."

OU juniors Chirapat Jao-Javanil and Anne-Catherine Tanguay each posted under-par second rounds. Jao-Javanil carded a team-low 70 (-2), five shots better than her opening round 75. She began the day with an eagle on the par-4 10th hole, draining a 146-yard approach shot with a 7-iron.

The reigning national champion (she won last year's NCAA title by four shots), Jao-Javanil jumped 41 places on the leaderboard into a tie for 23rd place with a two-round 145 (+1).

Tanguay moved up 36 spots in the standings from 64th to 28th after her 1-under 71 Wednesday. She was at 2 over par on the day through six holes but played the final 12 at 3 under. Her day included four birdies. Tanguay is at +2 through 36 holes.

Senior Taylor Schmidt also pocketed four second-round birdies en route to a 1-over 73. She was at 2 under par through 14 holes and in the tournament's top five before bogeying three of the last four. Her two-round 144 (E) has her tied for a team-best 20th place.

Kaitlyn Rohrback shot a 5-over 77 Wednesday and fellow junior Emily Collins carded a 79. Collins is tied for 70th place at 6 over par while Rohrback is tied for 80th at 7 over.

The second round was suspended Wednesday evening due to lightning with six teams still on the course. Second-round play will resume on Thursday at 7:25 a.m. ET, and the third round will begin at 7:30 a.m. The Sooners will likely tee off beginning at 12:55 p.m. ET on hole 10.
