After sailing through its first eight games, Oklahoma suffered a surprising home loss to Kansas in week No. 9. With only two regular season games and a bowl trip left, any hopes for the top prize looked slim.
Then OU eked out a 28-27 thriller at Missouri before coming home to dispatch Nebraska, 35-10. With the Big Eight title in tow, the No. 3-rated Sooners, in their first bowl game under Barry Switzer, headed to the Orange Bowl to meet Michigan.
OU prevailed in that 14-6 slugfest and got an assist when both No. 1 Ohio State and No. 2 Texas A&M suffered defeats in their bowl games.
