WACO, Texas – The Oklahoma men's and women's track & field teams are set to take on the competition at the Big 12 Championships this Friday through Sunday, May 3-5, at the Hart-Patterson Track & Field Complex on the campus of Baylor University.

The Sooner men enter the weekend on a high note after senior Riley Masters set the top time in the country last Sunday in the 1,500 meters at 3:38.79. OU holds three of the top 10 scores in the Big 12 in the event, with Masters and senior Patrick Casey in the top two spots.

The OU men have finished in the top three at the Big 12 meet each of the past three seasons and again have put together a well-rounded group. On the track, other top-ranked OU competitors include senior Tre' Lathan, ranked second in the 110-meter hurdles, junior Waymon Storey, ranked third in the 200 meters, junior Nathaniel Winfrey, ranked fourth in the 400-meter hurdles and sophomore Jorian Damen, ranked fifth in the 800 meters.

The men's 5000-meter race is also Sooner heavy, with four OU runners in the top 10, led by senior Kevin Williams, currently ranked fourth in the Big 12.

In the field events, freshman Tyler Renton is ranked best in the conference in the javelin and will look for his first outdoor title. In the hammer throw, senior Holden Mitchell is ranked third and is joined by freshman Austin Perry, ranked fifth.

The OU's women's team, ranked No. 23 in the nation, will rely on the field events this weekend, including 2012 Olympian Tia Brooks, who is looking for her second-straight Big 12 outdoor shot put title after winning the title last year with a Big 12 Championship-record throw of 18.22 meters. Brooks is the defending national champion in the event and broke the all-time collegiate indoor shot put record in winning the 2013 indoor national title with a throw of 19.22 meters.

The Sooners' javelin trio of freshmen Elizabeth Herrs and Avione Allgood and junior Ashley Kowalewski are ranked first, fourth and sixth, respectively, in the Big 12 while senior Kristen Rice ranks third in the high jump and sophomore Alexandra Morgan is fourth in the discus.

OU senior Claire McConnell will get the Sooners started in the first events of the Championships in the heptathlon on Thursday, with the decathlon, men's and women's hammer, women's pole vault, and men's and women's 10,000m finals also slated to be held on day one before the competition continues all day Saturday and Sunday.
