Sooners Earn Academic All-Big 12 Honors

NORMAN, Okla. -- A total of 21 University of Oklahoma track and field student-athletes were named to the 2013 Academic All-Big 12 Track and Field teams, the league announced today.

Sooner senior Jacy Bennett was one of 12 student-athletes to be nominated with a 4.0 grade point average. A supply chain management major, this marks the seventh consecutive semester with a 4.0 GPA.

A total of seven men and 10 women were named to the first team while two men and two women were named to the second team.

Bennett also was one of 12 Sooners who have now earned multiple academic honors in track and field from the Big 12. For Bennett, William Kogel, Holden Mitchell, Claire McConnell, Kristen Rice, Karen Shump, Kevin Williams and Nathaniel Winfrey, it was the third time to be honored. Molly Ferguson earned her fourth honor while Frezer Legesse, Hilary Krein, Morgan Nichols and Kevin Schwab made the team for a second time.

Student-athletes named to the first team must have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA. To qualify, student-athletes must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfer students are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

The Sooner track and fields teams are in Waco, Texas, preparing for the opening of the 2013 Big 12 Championships which start tomorrow at noon with the men's decathlon and the women's heptathlon. Action continues through Sunday.
