NORMAN, Okla. -- Members of the Oklahoma track and field teams officially punched their tickets to the NCAA West Regional on Thursday and will compete next weekend in Austin, Texas.
Seventeen student-athletes from the men's side and
13 from the women's side will represent the Sooners May 23-25 in the NCAA preliminary session after finishing in the top 48 of their respective events in the region.
Leading the men, runners-up in the Big 12 Championships two weeks ago, will be senior
Riley Masters, ranked first in the region in the 1,500 meters. Masters will be joined by two other Sooners in the 1,500, including Big 12 Champion
Patrick Casey, ranked fourth in the region, and senior
Frezer Legesse, ranked 25th.
Other top-ranked OU men's team members competing include senior
Kevin Williams, ranked eighth in the 10,000 meters, Big 12 Champion Tre' Lathan, ranked eighth in the 110-meter hurdles, and junior Waymon Storey, ranked 10th in the 200 meters.
Both the men's 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams also qualified for the region meet.
The Oklahoma women will enter the meet ranked No. 22 in the country. The Sooners are led by senior
Tia Brooks, the defending indoor and outdoor national champion in the shot put, who will begin the quest to defend her title. Brooks comes in as the No. 1 seed in the region and in the country after winning her second Big 12 outdoor shot put championship and fifth conference title overall.
Brooks will be joined by a strong field team for Oklahoma that includes javelin throwers
Elizabeth Herrs and
Avione Allgood. Both freshmen, Herrs ranks second in the region while Allgood won the Big 12 outdoor title and is ranked fourth.
The top
12 competitors from each individual event and 12 teams from each relay event from each regional meet will compete in the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore.
