NORMAN, Okla. - With the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships set to open in just over a week, the nationally ranked Sooner men's and women's track and field teams are taking a mixed approach to this weekend's competitions.
A group of Sooners are heading to Fayetteville for Saturday's Arkansas Invitational, then there is the senior duo of Tia Brooks and Riley Masters who will be competing by invitation on Friday and Sunday in a pair of premier national meets.
Brooks, the defending NCAA Outdoor shot put champion and a 2012 U.S. Olympian, will compete in the 104th annual Drake Relays in Des Moines at 11:30 a.m. Friday. She currently has the best mark in the nation in the shot by more than two feet.
Masters will head to the west coast to compete in the Payton Jordan Invitational, hosted by Stanford University on Sunday. Masters, who is entered in the 1500, will be running at 9:40 p.m. CDT and will be competing on the same track that he recorded the nation's third best 1,500-meter time, 3:40.77, on March 30.
A group of 15 Sooner student-athletes will compete in Fayetteville. Competition begins at 10 a.m. Saturday. An abbreviated meet schedule will end with the men's 4x400-meter relay at 7:55 p.m. OU student-athletes who will be competing include several freshmen and several field event entries.
The remainder of the Sooners' men's and women's student-athletes will take the weekend off from competition and continue preparation for the Big 12 Outdoor Championships which open on Friday, May 3, in Waco, Texas.
