NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma rowing team swept Big 12 rival Texas in the varsity finals and won the first Longhorn Invitational team title in convincing fashion Sunday on Lady Bird Lake in Austin, Texas.
For the first time in program history, the Sooners won every varsity race in a multi-day competition. The three-day regatta was capped by a four-race sweep of the Longhorns in the varsity events, a first for the OU program in its fifth season.
Against UT in the finals,
OU notched its largest winning margin of the weekend in the varsity eight and second-largest victory in the second varsity eight. Both the varsity four and second varsity four continued their perfect starts to the season and are now 7-0 and 6-0, respectively.
"This was truly a team effort," OU head coach Leeanne Crain said. "This is the first time in the history of the program that we've swept the competition in every varsity event at the Longhorn Invite. "I'm so proud of these guys, especially our seniors who are providing great leadership."
Oklahoma's varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four and second varsity four won all 11 races against Iowa, Kansas State, San Diego, Texas and Tulsa. Through the first two days of competition, the Sooners earned 58 of a possible 60 points to secure the matchup in the finals with Texas.
Points were awarded based on teams' finishes in the first and second varsity eight race, the varsity four and the novice eight. In the finals, OU earned 19 of a possible 20 points, with Texas claiming their lone point in the novice eight race. In the second tier finals, San Diego won every race against Iowa, while Tulsa claimed 19 of 20 points against Central Florida in the third group of finals. Kansas State swept SMU in the last finals pairing.
The Sooners earned nine of the first 10 points and had a 9-1 lead going into the final race, but needed a win by the varsity eight in the final event to secure the final 10 points and a the Longhorn Invite title. OU's top crew left little doubt to who would win the title with a 6:30.2 finish, 11.1 seconds ahead of UT.
In the second varsity eight, Oklahoma crossed the line in 6:37.0, ahead of Texas' 6:54.1. The largest win of the weekend for the boat was also their fifth straight victory of the season.
With an undefeated season on the line, both varsity fours posted their closest wins of the weekend. The first varsity four won with a 7:30.5 finish, 5.5 seconds ahead of the Longhorns, while the second varsity four notched a 7:34.9, just 1.2 seconds in front of the UT boat.
Both the novice eight and second novice eight were unable to claim wins against Texas. The novice eight finished in 7:10.8 and the second novice eight
posted a time of 7:27.2. The second-place finishes gave the Longhorns their only two wins of the day and they earned just one point from them.
The Sooners return to the water next weekend at the Pac 12 Challenge in Redwood City, Calif. OU will race Pac 12 powerhouses No. 2 California, No 9 Stanford, and Oregon State on March 30-31.
