OU Wins Four of Six to Open in Austin

NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma rowing won four if its six races and every varsity race on the first day of the Longhorn Invitational on Lady Bird Lake in Austin, Texas.
In the first of four rounds of racing, the Sooners notched victories against Big 12 rivals Kansas State and Texas on the 2,000 meter course. Both of OU's varsity eights beat Kansas State, while the varsity four and second varsity four beat Kansas State and Texas, respectively, to remain undefeated on the season. Oklahoma's two novice crews fell to Kansas State and Texas.
Points are awarded based on teams' finishes in the first and second varsity eight race, the varsity four and the novice eight. The Sooners earned 19 of a possible 20 points and are tied for third with Iowa. San Diego and Texas both recorded 20 points to lead the field. Kansas State and UCF each posted one point, while SMU and Tulsa are scoreless on the first day of racing.
The varsity eight finished in 7:00.5 to defeat Kansas State by 11.5 seconds. It was the smallest margin of victory of the day for the Sooners against the Wildcats, but the win marked the second straight for OU's top crew against Big 12 competition
after defeating Kansas two weeks ago at the OU Invitational.
The Sooners posted their largest win of the day in the second varsity eight. OU crossed the line in 7:03.9, nearly 20 seconds faster than Kansas State's 7:23.0.
After perfect 3-0 performances at the OU Invitational, the Sooners' varsity fours continued their hot start to the season with wins in Austin. The varsity four finished in 7:54.3 to beat Kansas State's 8:07.9. OU's second varsity four recorded a narrow 5.4 second win over Texas and finished in 7:52.1.
Both of Oklahoma's novice crews lost their opening races. The novice eight fell to K-State and finished in 7:22.7, while the second novice eight was defeated by Texas and had a time of 7:42.2.
The Longhorn Invitational continues Saturday with two additional rounds of racing. The Sooners compete against Iowa, Texas and USD beginning at 8:40 a.m. before racing Tulsa and UCF at 4:50 p.m. The finals will be held Sunday.
