NORMAN, Okla. -- The Oklahoma's women's golf team opened its spring season by shooting a first-round 298 (+10) Friday at the 12-team Florida State Match-up Tournament in Tallahassee, Fla., to finish the day in sixth place. Friday's round, the first of three in the event, was OU's first since late October.

The tournament, which is being held at the 7,172-yard, par-72 Southwood Golf Club, features a unique format. Each team is paired with another school and the tournament will be determined by taking the best four scores from the paired teams. The Sooners are paired with Georgia, which recorded the lowest total team score with a 290 (+2) in the first round.

“We played fine today,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell of her Sooners. “We made a few mistakes on the greens but I think this comes with the fact that we haven't competed in a while, so it's normal to have some nervousness.”

The Sooners were led by juniors Chirapat Jao-Javanil, Jade Staggs and Anne-Catherine Tanguay. The trio each carded a 2-over 74 to finish the round tied for 16th place out of 64 competitors. They trail leader Rocio Sanchez Lobato of Georgia by eight strokes.

Senior Taylor Schmidt finished the day in a tie for 27th place after shooting a 76 (+4). Included in her round was an eagle on the 288-yard par-4 seventh hole. Junior Emily Collins is tied for 35th place afterrecording a 5-over 77.

“As we get back in the competition mode I believe the girls will feel more comfortable with their game and adjust each round,” said Drouin-Luttrell.
