OKLAHOMA CITY – The University of Oklahoma women's rowing team swept SMU in the afternoon final to win the OU Invitational. The Sooners racked up four varsity eight wins, claimed three second varsity eight wins and four varsity four wins in the scored events. OU ended the weekend with 24 total wins.

“I'm really happy with the overall performance of the team,” Head Coach Leeanne Crain said. “The only loss for the varsity squad came in the 2V8 against Kansas. I was disappointed that they let that one slip away in the final couple of strokes. However, after reviewing the results, I was surprised to see that the Kansas 2V was actually 13 seconds faster than their 1V in that race set. Never the less, we worked on sustaining the intensity over the entire race course for the final three sessions, and I think the athletes in that boat learned a lot about themselves over the course of the weekend. The varsity eight and fours went undefeated in fifteen races, so I'm pretty impressed with the speed they're showing in the early part of the season. The novices also had some great wins. We've got some talent in the freshman boats and I wouldn't be surprised to see some of those athletes move into varsity lineups by the end of the season.”
The Sooners went undefeated Sunday afternoon. OU upset SMU in the varsity four, second varsity eight and varsity eight to win the OU Invitational. The varsity four ended their event with a time of 7:57.07 to 9:09.25, the second varsity eight concluded the day with a time of 7:12.40 to 7:45.27 and the varsity eight finished at a time of 6:54.0 to SMU's 7:32.52 to claim first place.
The other Oklahoma boats competed against Kansas, Tulsa and Kansas State to begin the morning session. The women took three wins with the third varsity four beating KSU and Tulsa with a time of 8:05.26, the novice eight winning against Kansas State, 7:08.38 to 7:20.94, and the second varsity four claimed its race with Kansas with a time of 7:57.37 to 8:03.33.
The second novice eight fell to Kansas with a time of 7:15.22 to 7:25.26.
SMU had seven wins in scored events on the weekend over Creighton, Oklahoma City University, Tulsa and University of Central Oklahoma.
OU returns to action next weekend, March 13-16, for the Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas. Last year the Sooners claimed three wins over UCF and swept 12 events during the weekend.
