NORMAN, Okla. -- In its final preseason event of the 2012-13 season, the University of Oklahoma's wrestling squad saw the Red and White squads tie, 17-17, in the annual Red/White scrimmage at McCasland Field House Thursday evening.
The match began at 125 pounds between three-year starter Jarrod Patterson of the red team and a freshman from Edmond, Okla., Kyle Garcia. Patterson struck first with a takedown in the first period, but Garcia countered with a quick escape to cut into the veteran's lead, 2-1. Before the conclusion of the first period, Patterson totaled another takedown to go ahead, 4-1. The All-American added an escape in the second and a takedown in the third to take the first match, 7-1.
In the 133-pound matchup, redshirt senior Scott Chene took to the mat against redshirt freshman Cody Brewer. It took halfway into the second period until either one got on the board, as Brewer registered an escape to go up, 1-0. The duo battled it out in the third and final period in a back-and-forth matchup that saw Chene register three escapes. It wasn't enough for the Irvine, Calif., native though as Brewer battled back with two takedowns to take the bout by decision, 5-3.
Returning All-American Kendric Maple made a statement in the 141-pound contest against redshirt freshman Dalton Dennis. Maple took a 12-0 lead halfway through the second before Dalton pulled away with an escape to put himself up on the board. The overwhelming lead was too much to overcome, as Maple registered another takedown and a near fall in addition to 3:30 of riding time to down Dalton with a tech fall, 18-1.
Starting strong after his first All-American season for the Crimson and Cream, Nick Lester took down Chase Gordon, 16-0, after registering four near falls, two takedowns and 3:07 of riding time.
“Lester did a really good job,” Oklahoma head coach Mark Cody said. “He's very dominant on top, and he's got a lot of weapons. He's got a lot of ability; I'm sure he will be All-American this year. The sky is the limit for him.”
It was a tight match in the 157-pound bout between Matt Lester and Justin DeAngelis. Neither wrestled registered a point in the first or third period, but it was Lester who pulled away with an escape in the beginning of the second to win, 1-0.
Redshirt senior Kyle Detmer and redshirt junior Bubby Graham battled it out at 165. A quick first period saw Graham escape in the final minutes to go ahead 3-2 as they entered the second. Detmer managed to tie the match, 3-3, after an early escape, but Graham quickly registered two more points with a takedown. Despite the 5-3 lead, Detmer refused to give in before the third and final round as he registered an escape in the closing thirty seconds. Graham scored back-to-back points with an escape and takedown to eventually take the bout by decision, 8-5.
“I thought Kendric Maple had a good performance,” Cody remarked. “I think Bubby Graham did really well at 165 lbs. He had a pretty formidable opponent [Kyle Detmer] that he sees every day.”
Freshman Matt Reed made a statement in his first appearance donning the Crimson and Cream when he took down redshirt junior Nolan McBryde in the 174-pound matchup. The freshman from Wichita, Kan., took the battle, 6-2, after he put the first score on the board with a takedown in the first period, limited McBryde to a scoreless second period and added 2:32 of riding time.
Three-time All-American transfer Travis Rutt took home a win for the White team after he totaled an 8-5 decision against freshman Greg Wilson in the 184-pound contest.
A duo of freshmen in Brad Johnson and Ross Larson fought it out in the 197-pound matchup. Johnson jumped ahead to a 5-0 lead at the end of the second after registering two takedowns and an escape. Larson totaled an escape and takedown early in the third to tighten the gap, 5-3, but it wasn't enough as Johnson totaled one more escape to take the match, 6-3.
“They both scrapped really hard,” Cody said of the 197 lb. match. “They did a really good job. For two freshmen to go out there and battle like they did, that was awesome. They just let it fly, and when guys go out to that, I think it's very impressive.”
2012 NCAA Qualifier Keldrick Hall went up against fellow heavyweight, freshman Hunter Davis, in the final clash of the night. The veteran jumped ahead to a 6-0 lead in the first until Davis escaped in the closing 30 seconds to cut in at 6-1. Davis registered two escapes in the third and final period, but it wasn't enough for the young freshman as Hall took the closing contest by decision, 9-3.
The Sooners will officially open the 2012-13 season next weekend with a Friday night, 7 p.m. matchup at McCasland Field House with Oklahoma City University.
