NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma wrestling squad will bring the 2012-13 preseason to an end this Thursday evening, Oct. 25, when it partakes in its annual Red/White scrimmage at McCasland Field House. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
The top two wrestlers in each weight class will take to the mat against one another in an effort to determine starters for the upcoming season.
"We're excited to see how these guys will perform under the lights," explained Oklahoma assistant coach Jared Frayer. "A lot of them have been working out for the past six months, since summer started, so it's going to show what these guys put in throughout the summer and preseason."
"They'll be able to let it go, with this being the first competition of the season," he added. "It's tough to wrestle the whole preseason, but it's a time to show what you're made of.
"
Oklahoma, ranked preseason No. 11 by WIN magazine and No. 13 by InterMat wrestling, returns seven starters and NCAA qualifiers to this year's squad. New to the team are 11 freshmen.
Kendric Maple (141) highlights the Sooner roster after a redshirt sophomore campaign that saw him capture the first All-America honor of his career with a fourth-place finish at the 2012 NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Mo. Maple tallied a team-high seven pins on the season.
Jarrod Patterson (125), Nick Lester (149), Matt Lester (157), Bubby Graham (165), Kyle Detmer (165) and Keldrick Hall (285) highlight a list of OU NCAA qualifiers set to return to the mat this season.
The Sooners add two decorated transfers in Andrew Howe, a 2010 NCAA Champion and three-time All-American at 165 pounds and Travis Rutt, an All-American at 184 pounds in 2011. Both took an Olympic redshirt last year to train for the 2012 games in London, before making their way to Norman.
For many Sooners, it'll be their first time competing under the lights of the historic McCasland Field House.
"It's a big opportunity for the freshmen this week," remarked Frayer. "It's going to be exciting for them to perform in front of their home fans.
"It's an environment that we take pride in making for both our athletes and fans. For these true freshmen, it'll be their first time competing in a collegiate scene like that."
The Sooners will officially begin 2012-13 competition when they welcome Oklahoma City University to McCasland Field House on Friday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m.
"I think everyone is excited," Frayer continued. "We are looking forward to seeing them out on the mat, and seeing what they have to bring, come OCU next Friday."
