NORMAN, Okla. -- The University of Oklahoma women's golf team endured windy conditions and fired a second-round 295 (+7) Tuesday to widen its lead at the 18-team Susie Maxwell Berning Classic in Norman, Okla. Competing at the par-72 Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club, the Sooners hold a 15-shot lead with one round remaining among a field that includes seven top-35 teams.
Fourteenth-ranked OU stands at +3 (579) through 36 holes and is followed on the leaderboard by No. 15 Texas Tech (+18)and No. 32 Coastal Carolina (+20).
"It was a tough day with the windy conditions," said OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. "The first five holes played really tough for us, but the girls hung in there and fought really hard all day. I'm really proud of them for that."
Oklahoma's second-round performance was highlighted by juniors Emily Collins and Chirapat Jao-Javanil, who eachcarded a 1-under 71. Both golfers entered the day tied for fifth place at 2 under par and are now tied for second place, one shot behind Notre Dame's Lindsey Weaver.
"I was pretty pleased with my results today," said Jao-Javanil, last year's national champion. "The wind changed a lot of the decisions I (normally) make on the course and I just tried to keep calm mentally, pace myself and just take it one shot at a time. I didn't hit super beautiful shots today, but I just tell myself that pars are good and I don't get frustrated over putts that don't go in or certain shots that don't look that good due to the wind. I just try to be patient and be happy with whatever the course gives out. Patience is the key."
Jao-Javanil and Collins are two of only five players out of 95 who shot under par in the second round. They each recorded four birdies and three bogeys.
Fellow junior Anne-Catherine Tanguay fired a 3-over 75 in the second round, dropping her one spot to sixth place. Tanguay, who won last year's Susie Maxwell, started off with a double bogey on the first hole before playing the final 17 holes at 1 over par. She stands at +1 for the tournament, five shots out of the lead.
Playing as an individual, senior Jacki Marshall also shot a second-round 75 (+3), moving her up five spots into a tie for 14th place.
Also competing as an individual, OU junior Jade Staggs entered the day in a tie for 70th place but jumped to a tie for 35th place with a second-round 74 (+2).
Senior Taylor Schmidt carded a 78 (+6) in Tuesday's second round, giving her a 36-hole score of 152 (+8). She stands in a tie for 28th place.
Junior Kaitlyn Rohrback ended the day with a 9-over 81 giving her a two-round score of 155 (+11). The transfer from Tennessee dropped to a tie for 49th place.
With one round remaining, the Sooners are looking to sew up their second straight Susie Maxwell Berning Classic title.
"We've got 18 holes left and the conditions are going to change again tomorrow with a north wind," said Drouin-Luttrell. "But we're used to playing that way here and the hole locations should be fine. So we just have to go out there and make some pars. There's nothing really special that needs to be done, except stick to our game plans. Each of our girls has their own (game plan). They know how to play this course better than anybody."
