NORMAN, Okla. — Twelve athletes from the Oklahoma Track and Field program head to Des Moines, Iowa, this week for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships beginning Wednesday on the campus of Drake University in downtown Des Moines. With seven athletes competing in at least two events, the twelve athletes account for 17 entries at the event.
The No. 5 Oklahoma women enter the meet with 13 entries, the fifth-best total in the country, while the Oklahoma men bring four entries to Des Moines. The event will be televised Friday on CBS Sports Network at 6:30 p.m. CT and CBS on Saturday at 12 p.m. NCAA.com and GoDrakeBulldogs.com will webcast the portions of the meet not being televised.
Two Sooners own top-three spots in the national rankings with Mookie Salaam, the nation's No. 1 athlete in the 200-meter dash, leading the way. Ti'Anca Mock leads all Oklahoma women with the No. 3 ranking in the long jump.
The Sooner women have three athletes competing in at least two individual events led by Brittany Borman and Karen Shump in the throws arena. Both will compete in the discus, ranking No. 5 and No. 13, respectively, while Borman will compete in the javelin, where she is ranked No. 4, and Shump in the shot put, owning a No. 6 ranking. Shump will be joined in the shot put by sophomore classmate Tia Brooks, who is ranked No. 5 nationally in the event. The trio of Sooners account for five entries in the throws ring, a number that leads the nation on the both the men's and women's side.
The third female athlete to double up in individual events is Candyce McGrone who will compete in the both the 100- and 200-meter dash. McGrone enters the meet ranked No. 7 nationally in the 200 and No. 14 in the 100. She'll be joined in the 100 by Shawna Anderson who is currently No. 17 in the event. The two will also run on the No. 9 4x100-meter relay where they will be joined by Mock and Sherine Wells.
Competing in the longest event on the track will be Jessica Engel who enters the meet No. 14 in the 10,000-meter run in what will be just her third 10K run of her career after winning the Big 12 title in the event in her first race ever at the distance. A first time qualifier at the NCAA Championships, Sarah Pappas will attempt to add her name to OU's All-American list as she competes in the pole vault, an event she is ranked No. 14 in.
Salaam is one of two Sooner men competing as both he and K.P. Singh will double up on individual events. Salaam will also compete in the 100-meter dash, an event he is ranked No. 13 nationally in, while Singh will throw in the discus and hammer, events he is ranked No. 13 and No. 12 in, respectively.
