Sooners Head to USA Track and Field Championships

NORMAN, Okla. -- Sixteen athletes with ties to the Oklahoma Track and Field program will be in action this weekend at the USA Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. Action at Historic Hayward Field begins on Thursday and will feature 10 athletes that were a part of the OU team in 2011, five Sooner alums and one incoming freshman.
The meet serves as not only the American national championships, but as the qualifier for the 2011 IAAF World Championships held in August in Daegu, Korea. Those athletes finishing in the top three of their events and meeting the IAAF qualifying standards will represent USA at the event.
Three Sooners from the 2011 squad will double up at the event as Mookie Salaam and Candyce McGrone each compete in the 100- and 200-meter dash in their respective divisions while Brittany Borman enters the meet in both the discus and javelin. Salaam enters the meet with the fastest non-wind aided 200 time by an American this year and the fourth-fastest time in the world. The Edmond, Okla., native is ranked fifth among Americans in the 100.
McGrone will enter the meet ranked No. 6 in the U.S. in the 100-meter dash and No. 8 in the 200-meter dash. McGrone will be joined by OU alums Scottesha Miller in the 100 and Leslie Cole in the 200. Cole will also compete in the 400-meter dash, an event she is ranked No. 8 in the U.S. in.
Borman is No. 5 among Americans in the javelin and No. 11 in the discus and will be in action for the first time since winning the NCAA title in the javelin. The NCAA runner-up in the shot put, Tia Brooks, enters the meet fourth among Americans in the event and will look to set a PR for the fourth time this season after breaking the OU shot put record at the NCAA Championships.
The runner-up in the long jump at the NCAA Championships, Ti'Anca Mock will compete in the event at Eugene. Seemingly hitting her peak at the right time, equaling her program record at NCAAs, Mock enters this weekend with the sixth-best jump by an American this year. Mock will be joined on the jumps runway by alum Toni Smith who will be in action in the triple jump, an event she is ranked No. 3 in nationally.
Eric Bailey will compete in his final competition as a Sooner in the 400-meter hurdles, an event he is ranked No. 15 in. The 2010 NCAA 60-meter hurdles champion, Ronnie Ash will take to the track in the 110-meter hurdles. Two more alums round the competition for the Sooners as Kevin Bookout competes in the shot put and Tydree Lewis takes to the air in the triple jump.
Three current Sooners and one incoming freshman are in the field for the USA Junior Championships which will serve as the selection meet for the 2011 Pan American Junior Championships. The top four finishers in each event are selected for inclusion to the event.
Taylor Wardall will compete in the 1,500-meter run and is joined by distance teammate Danny Nicolls who is slated to run in the 5,000- and 10,000-meter run. Jesica Ejesieme will run in the 100-meter hurdles while incoming Sooner Austin Perry from Duncan, Okla., will be throw in the shot put.
