OKLAHOMA CITY – The University of Oklahoma softball team dropped its opening game of the 2011 Women's College World Series to top-seeded Arizona State 3-1 Thursday evening at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium. Senior Haley Nix led OU with a 3-for-3 performance and drove in the Sooners (43-18) only run of the night.
Arizona State freshman Dallas Escobedo threw a complete game, allowing the one earned run on five hits and two walks. Escobedo struck out six. Oklahoma starter Keilani Ricketts allowed the three earned runs on six hits and three walks. She struck out four to move her career total to 793, 12 shy of the Oklahoma career record.
Nix reached on a two-out single to left field and Keilani Ricketts drew a four-pitch walk as the Sooners put two runners aboard in the first against Escobedo. Ricketts gave up an infield single to Lesley Rogers but Kaylyn Castillo grounded into a double play to end the first.
Brittany Williams drew her 48th walk of the season in the second to inch closer to the single season record held by Amber Flores (2009). Nix got a two-out single again in the third but was left stranded to end the third.
Sam Parlich walked and moved to second on a passed ball before the Sooners intentionally walked Katelyn Boyd. After both runners advanced on the second passed ball of the inning, Ricketts struck out Rogers looking to end the threat.
The Sun Devils jumped on the board in the fourth as Castillo and Annie Lockwood reached on a walk and hit by pitch, respectively. Pinch runners Kayla Ketchum and Bailey Wigness then advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Krista Donnewirth and the duo came around to score on Mandy Urfer's single up the middle.
Oklahoma got one of the runs back in the top of the fifth. Brianna Turang singled to center field and came around to score on Nix's double off the right center field wall. The Sun Devils promptly responded with a solo home run to left center by Boyd to lead off the bottom half of the frame.
Katie Norris got a single down the left field line in the top of the seventh but pinch runner Haley McGregor was thrown out when Cierra Hughes reached on a fielder's choice. Hughes was stranded on first to end the game as OU fell 3-1.
Parlich went 2-for-2 with, while Ufer's on't hit was the two-run single. Rogers ended the game 2-for-3.
Nix went 3-for-3 with the only RBI. Turang scored the Sooners' run after reaching on her only hit of the night. Norris' seventh-inning single was the only other hit allowed by Escobedo.
Oklahoma returns to action Saturday in an elimination game against Missouri. First pitch for the game is set for 1:30 p.m. CT on ESPN and ESPN3.com.
