OKLAHOMA CITY – The ninth-seeded University of Oklahoma softball team committed a season-high four errors as the Sooners (43-19) were eliminated from the 2011 Women's College World Series Saturday afternoon by a final score of 4-1 to fifth-seeded Missouri (53-9).
The Sooners had two players making their first career starts at their respective positions after an injury to catcher Katie Norris. Senior Dani Dobbs replaced Norris as OU's starting catcher. Freshman Ali Vandever made her first career start at third in place of Dobbs. Jessica Shults also returned to the lineup for the first time since May 8 as the designated player.
After going down in order in the first, the Sooners had a prime opportunity to score in the second. Keilani Ricketts reached on a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. After Chana'e Jones walked, Dobbs flew out to center and Brittany Williams hit into a fielder's choice before Shults struck out to leave two runners on.
The Tigers got on the board in the bottom of the second. Catherine Lee led off with a single and pinch runner Shana White moved to second on a walk by Princess Krebs. The Tigers then tried a double steal attempt that saw both runners advance successfully before White scored on Dobbs' errant throw to the uncovered base.
The Sooners left two runners on in the third after Ali Vandever reached on a fielding error and Brianna Turang reached on a bunt single.
The Tigers added an additional run in the fourth as Ashley Fleming and Lee reached on back-to-back singles. After two fielder's choices, Lee scored on a throwing error by Turang to push Missouri ahead 2-0.
Missouri doubled its lead in the bottom of the sixth as Nicole Hudson led off with a double through the right side. Fleming was hit by a pitch and both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Lee. Hudson then got caught in a rundown play at the plate and scored after home plate was left uncovered. Fleming also scored after the ball went to the backstop.
Dobbs, in her final at-bat as a Sooner, led off the seventh with a solo home run, her ninth of the year. Williams singled but was thrown out on a line out double play by pinch hitter Norris. Vandever singled through the left side and Destinee Martinez reached on a single and both runners advance on a throwing error. Turang popped up to end the game as the Sooners fell, 4-1.
Hudson and Lee each had two hits for Missouri as the Tigers' 3-4-5 hitters were responsible for five of MU's six hits and three of the four runs. Chelsea Thomas threw her 30th complete game of the year, allowing the one earned run on six hits. She walked two and struck out six.
Turang went 2-for-4 as the leading hitter for the Sooners. Ricketts allowed four runs, only one earned, on six hits and one walk. She struck out five.
