Nine Receive Academic All-District Honors

NORMAN, Okla. -- The Oklahoma Track and Field program placed nine student-athletes on the Capital One Academic All-District women's track & field/cross country teams announced Thursday morning. Of the nine, four received first team honors as Eric Bailey (sociology), Rob Sorrell (aviation), Jacy Bennett (management) and Brittany Borman (health and exercise science) were all selected by CoSIDA members for first team honors in CoSIDA's sixth district.

With the first team honors, the four are now eligible for Capital One Academic All-America honors which will be voted on by CoSIDA members beginning Tuesday, June 7. Bennett was one of just four female athletes in the district who garnered a perfect 4.0 grade point average.

Scott Cooper (finance), Alex Muntefering (health and exercise science), Jessica Engel (health and exercise science), Karen Shump (special education) and Sherine Wells (elementary education) were all named to the district's second team.

Four of the nine still have action remaining in the 2011 season as qualifiers for next week's NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. Borman qualified for the event in the discus and javelin, one of two athletes receiving the honor to double up as Shump will compete in the discus and shot put. Engel will run in the 10,000-meter run while Wells takes a leg on the 4x100-meter relay.
