NORMAN, Okla. - The Oklahoma women's golf team shot the seventh lowest score of Saturday's round at the NCAA West Regional, but its 301 (+13) wasn't enough to advance to the NCAA Championship. The Sooners concluded their record-breaking season with an 11th-place finish at the NCAA West Regional, carding a 54-hole total of 917 (+53) at the par-72 Washington National Golf Course in Auburn, Wash.

"I'm proud of the girls today," said OU head coach Veronique Drouin. "We had really tough conditions this afternoon and fought until it was over."

In order to advance to the NCAA Championship, Oklahoma had to finish in the top eight of the 24-team field. The Sooners finished nine strokes behind eighth-place Texas A&M, which advanced to play in the NCAA Championship on its home course.

Oklahoma fired a 316 (+28) in Thursday's opening round to finish the day in 20th place and had to play catch-up the rest of the tournament. OU shot a 300 (+12) in the second round Friday to climb into a tie for 13th place and entered the final round 13 strokes out of the top eight.

Not only did OU have to fight back in the standings, it had to fight Mother Nature as well. A majority of Saturday's afternoon round was played in rain, some of which was played in occasional downpours and included some hail. The morning round, that featured all eight advancing teams, included only a small drizzle.

"Our girls showed a tremendous amount of character as they continued to fight out there," said Drouin. "For a team with three freshmen, I'm really impressed by the maturity they showed in these harsh conditions."

Junior Brooke Collins led the Sooners for the second round in a row. The junior ended her first round in a tie for 104th place after shooting an 82 (+10), but bounced back with a 73 (+1) Friday and a 71 (-1) in Saturday to finish in a tie for 25th place.

Freshman Chirapat "Ja" Jao-Javanil tied for 41st place with a 229 (+13). The Thailand native had an extraordinary season, finishing in the top 15 in all but two of her 11 tournaments, including six top-10 showings. Her season stroke average of 73.82 broke the previous record set by Ellen Mueller for the lowest in school history.

Mueller concluded her final tournament as a Sooner in a tie for 49th place with a 230 (+14). The senior exits Oklahoma as one of the most acclaimed golfers in program history. Mueller, a two-time All-Big 12 honoree, boasts 26 career top-20 finishes, three NCAA Regional appearances and an individual appearance at last season's NCAA Championship.

A native of Evansville, Ind., Mueller finished with a 75.28 career stroke average, the second lowest in program history. The highlight of her career came in October when she set the school record for lowest 54-hole score at the Dale McNamara Invitational. Mueller's 7-under-par 209 led the Sooners to a 23-stroke victory in the Owasso, Okla., event.

Coach Drouin had nothing but praise to say about her senior.

"Ellen had a great career at OU," she said. "She's been a tremendous leader and will be greatly missed. It was truly a privilege to be her coach."

Anne-Catherine Tanguay finished the NCAA West Regional tied for 56th place with a 232 (+16) and fellow freshman Emily Collins tied for 113th with a 246 (+30).

Despite the heartbreaking end to the Sooners' season, Drouin's squad can't hold their heads too low with all they have accomplished in their 2010-11 campaign. OU placed in the top five in eight of its 11 tournaments, the second most in program history. It boasted two fifth-place finishes, two third-place showings, three second-place finishes and one tournament victory (Dale McNamara Invitational).

The Sooners broke records all season long. They recorded five of the program's six lowest 54-hole scores, and all four of its lowest 18-hole scores.

"It was a great year for our program," said the OU head coach. "We have come a long way and look to continue to improve and put Norman on the map in the collegiate golf world. We played well all year and I hope our team learned a lot. These girls have a promising future, as does the University of Oklahoma golf program."
