Salaam Named Big 12 T&F Athlete of the Year

NORMAN, Okla. — Oklahoma sprinter Mookie Salaam continued to add to his trophy case Thursday as the Big 12 Conference announced the Edmond, Okla., native as the 2011 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Outstanding Performer of the Year. The honor comes four days after the junior swept the Big 12 titles in the 100- and 200-meter dash while running the second leg on OU's 4x100-meter relay that finished fourth.
With the win, Salaam becomes the first athlete in Big 12 history to win both the indoor and outdoor Big 12 Track and Field Outstanding Performer of the Year awards in the same year and the first Sooner athlete to capture the honor. Salaam was also this year's high point scorer at both the Big 12 Indoor and Outdoor Championships, totaling 21.25 points at each event. Salaam is one of only two student-athletes to win the high-point scorer at both championships (Reggie Witherspoon, Baylor, 2007).
Salaam clocked the world's second-fastest 200-meter dash with an American-leading time of 20.05 Sunday in Norman at the Big 12 Championships. The time broke a 17-year old OU record that was held by David Oaks (20.24 - 1994), a 12-year old John Jacobs Track and Field Complex record of 20.08 (Aaron Armstrong - Barton County, 1999) and a three-year old Big 12 Championship meet record of 20.29 set by Gerald Phiri in 2008.
Salaam, the 2011 NCAA Indoor champion in the 200-meter dash, now turns his focus to the NCAA West Preliminary Round, May 26-28, in Eugene, Ore. The event is the qualifier for the NCAA Championships, June 8-11, in Des Moines, Iowa. Salaam enters the preliminary round as the nation's top-ranked athlete in the 200-meter dash and the No. 8 athlete in the 100-meter dash.
