OU Set to Host Big 12 Track & Field Championships

NORMAN, Okla. — The Oklahoma Track and Field program is set to host the 2011 Big 12 Track and Field Championships this weekend at the John Jacobs Track and Field Complex with action kicking off Friday morning. Tickets for the meet, which will feature eight nationally ranked men's teams and nine ranked women's teams, can be purchased by calling the OU Ticket Office at 405-325-2424 or by visiting SoonerSports.com.

The event begins Friday at 11 a.m. with the women's javelin and runs until Sunday night with the final event, the men's 4x400-meter relay, slated to begin at 9:45 p.m.

The No. 16 Oklahoma men will be looking to capture their second Big 12 outdoor crown and the first since 2007 after finishing second in the event in 2010. The No. 6 OU women have positioned themselves to capture a program-best finish at the event after taking sixth in 2010. No. 1 Texas A&M leads the way on the men's side as do the No. 2 Aggies on the women's side. OU is second among Big 12 teams on the women's side and sixth on the men's.

Three OU athletes, all in the throws ring, will look to defend 2010 titles against a field that includes 15 national leaders and 26 defending champions. K.P. Singh will look to become just third athlete in Big 12 history to capture back-to-back Big 12 titles in the hammer throw while Brittany Borman attempts to be the fourth athlete to accomplish the feat in the women's discus. Singh enters the meet leading the Big 12 with a No. 10 national ranking while Borman leads the Big 12 with a No. 3 national ranking in the discus and a No. 5 ranking in the javelin.

Big 12 Championship Central 

Karen Shump will see her biggest competition in defending her shot put crown come from the same uniform as her teammate and Big 12 indoor shot put champion Tia Brooks enters the meet ranked No. 4 nationally, one spot ahead of Shump.

The Big 12 indoor champion in the 60- and 200-meter dash, Mookie Salaam enters the outdoor meet with the conference's top billing in the 200-meter dash with a season-best time of 20.27, the second fastest in the NCAA. Salaam will also be in contention in the 100-meter dash, an event that sees nine Big 12 athletes ranked nationally.

On the women's side of the sprints, Candyce McGrone will look to become the first ever OU athlete to win a Big 12 crown in the women's 200-meter dash. The junior enters the meet with the No. 2 mark in the Big 12, 22.86, which ranks No. 4 nationally. Already the Oklahoma record holder in the 100-meter dash, McGrone takes her 11.17 season-best time into the meet, ranking fourth among Big 12 athletes.
