NORMAN, Okla. — Oklahoma Associate Head Women's Track and Field Coach Dana Boone has been named an assistant coach for Team USA for the 2011 Pan Am Junior Championships, July 22-24, in Miramar, Fla. The sixth-year OU staff member will oversee the women's jumps and combined events at the meet that features the top athletes from North and South America, ages 16-19.
Athletes competing for Boone will be selected based on their performance at the USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Ore., June 23-26. The biannual meet has been dominated by the United States as of late including in 2009 when the U.S. won 56 total medals including 21 gold medals.
“It feels great to have been selected to the Pan Am junior staff,” said Boone. “I consider it a great opportunity and look forward to fulfilling my duties.”
Boone's selection means the University of Oklahoma will be represented at the event for a fourth consecutive time. In 2009, OU jumpers Will Claye and Alex Madkins competed for USA with Claye winning the Pan Am title in the triple jump. In 2007 Kevin Snyder earned a silver in the high jump while Marcus Pugh grabbed gold as a member of the USA's 4x100-meter relay in 2005.
