NORMAN, Okla. -- The 20th-ranked Oklahoma women's golf team fired a first-round 295 (+7) Friday to finish the day in a tie for 10th place at the 23-team Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga.

The Sooners are ahead of five top-25 teams in the talent-filled field that boasts 14 top-25 teams, including five in the top 10.

“We got off to a slow start this morning,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin. “We had a lot of birdie opportunities and only sunk five of them, which is very uncharacteristic of us. There's still a lot of golf left to play.”

With 36 holes remaining, the Sooners trail frontrunner and fourth-ranked Purdue by 11 strokes, but are only four strokes out of third place.

The Liz Murphey features a unique format in which all five competitors from each school play together on each hole (as opposed to seeded players from three or four teams playing together). A team's score for each hole is determined by the lowest four scores on that hole. Individuals' total scores are used in the player standings.

The Sooners were led by freshman Chirapat “Ja” Jao-Javanil and senior Ellen Mueller. The OU duo each shot a 75 (+3) to finish the round in a tie for 20th place out of 120 competitors.

Freshman Anne-Catherine Tanguay shot a 5-over 77 and ended the round in a tie for 42nd place. Tanguay and Jao-Javanil each recorded two birdies.

Junior Brooke Collins is tied for 78th after carding a 79 (+7) and freshman Emily Collins is tied for 93rd with an 81 (+9).

Drouin said she's confident the Sooners can come out strong in the second round.

“Once we get those birdie putts to fall we'll start picking up momentum,” said the OU head coach. “This tournament is filled with a lot of talented teams that we're capable of competing with. We have two more rounds to play and we're going to continue fighting.”

The Sooners tee off Saturday morning at 8:30 CT. Live stats will be available at Golfstat.com
