NORMAN, Okla. -- Both the Oklahoma men's and women's track and field programs climbed in the latest national rankings released Tuesday by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The Oklahoma women moved up to No. 8 nationally while the Oklahoma men also moved up one spot to No. 9. Both rankings reflect the highest of the season for both teams.
Heading into this weekend's Big 12 Championships, the Oklahoma women are third among Big 12 teams behind No. 3 Texas and No. 5 Texas A&M while the OU men fall behind No. 4 Texas A&M and No. 8 Texas.
Eleven Sooners boast top-10 national rankings in their individual events led by junior men's sprinter Mookie Salaam. The Edmond, Okla., native is the nation's top athlete in the men's 60-meter dash and the fifth-best in the 200-meter dash. K.P. Singh is No. 4 nationally in the men's weight throw while George Alex is No. 9 in the 5,000-meter run.
On the women's side, OU places two throwers in the top five of the shot put as Karen Shump comes in at No. 2 and Tia Brooks is at No. 5. Like Salaam on the men's side, Candyce McGrone also doubles in the short sprints rankings at No. 4 in the 200-meter dash and No. 10 in the 60-meter dash. McGrone is tied with senior Scottesha Miller at the No. 10 spot in the 60.
The horizontal jumps see two Sooners in the nation's top 10 as Ti'Anca Mock is No. 8 in the long jump and Jasmine Simmons is No. 10 in the triple jump.
