NORMAN, Okla. — Oklahoma junior Candyce McGrone was named the Big 12 Women's Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week the conference announced Tuesday afternoon. The junior received the honor after breaking the Oklahoma program record in the 200-meter dash while automatically qualifying for the NCAA Championships in the event.
Competing at the Tyson Invitational on Saturday, McGrone narrowly finished second in the event as both she and LSU's Kimberlyn Duncan both finished with identical times of 23.01. In a photo finish, Duncan held McGrone off by one-thousandth of a second, 23.004-23.005.
McGrone broke a year-old Oklahoma record as she cut her PR in the 200 down by three-tenths of a second after running 23.31 at last week's New Balance Invitational. Current Sooner Scottesha Miller had previously held the record with a time of 23.14 from 2010.
McGrone is now ranked fourth nationally in the 200-meter dash and 10th nationally in the 60-meter dash.
McGrone's honor markes the first by a female Sooner this season and the second by an Oklahoma athlete after Mookie Salaam won the men's honor on Feb. 1.
