OU Women No. 10, Men 18 in Opening Rankings

NORMAN, Okla. — On the eve of the 2011 track and field season, the Oklahoma Track and Field program received top-20 rankings in both the men's and women's opening rankings released by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Thursday afternoon. The Oklahoma women open the year at No. 10 while the men follow at No. 18.

The OU women are second among Big 12 schools following No. 2 Texas A&M while the defending Big 12 champion Oklahoma men are fifth among conference opponents.

Fifteen women from the OU program will head east to Fayetteville, Ark., tomorrow as they open the 2011 season at the Arkansas Invitational. The group which consists of jumpers, sprinters and distance athletes will take on host and No. 6 Arkansas among others inside the Randal Tyson Track Center.

The meet will mark the 2011 debut for four All-Americans as returning Sooners Ti'Anca Mock, Jasmine Simmons and Sherine Wells are joined by Florida State transfer Candyce McGrone. The Indianapolis native comes to Norman having earned All-American status in both the indoor and outdoor 200-meter dash.

Simmons enters the meet ranked No. 6 nationally in the triple jump and No. 25 in the long jump. Mock joins Simmons in the long jump rankings at No. 21 while Wells is No. 35 in the 60-meter dash.

McGrone will be one of five newcomers competing for the Sooners as Kelsey Brown, Jesica Ejesieme, Hilary Krein, and Annie Martin all take to the track for the first time wearing Oklahoma uniforms. McGrone enters the year ranked No. 13 in the 200-meter dash.
