NORMAN, Okla. — The University of Oklahoma Track and Field program travels south to Austin, Texas this weekend for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary that begins on Thursday and runs through Saturday. The three-day meet, which features the top 48 athletes in the west in each event along with the top 24 relays, is a precursor for the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., as the top 12 finishers in each event advance to the final NCAA meet, June 9-12. Qualifiers from the West Prelims will face athletes from the East Prelims held this weekend in Greensboro, N.C.
The Oklahoma program has a total of 44 entries, 27 on the men's side and 17 on the women's side, spread out among 34 individuals and three relays. With 27 entries, the Oklahoma men tied with BYU for the fourth highest total in the nation. Nebraska leads the nation with 32 entries, followed by Oregon with 29 and LSU third with 28. The Big 12 Conference leads all conferences with 208 entries in the weekend's activities. All Big 12 member institutions will be in Austin.
The OU women enter the weekend ranked fourth nationally and third among schools in the west prelim while the men are 14th nationally and eighth among west programs. The women enter the meet with 12 entries ranked in the top 12 of the west while the men have 11 entries below the 12th-place advancement cutoff.
The field in Austin will be a tough one as 15 of the nation's top-25 women's teams will be in action along with 14 of the top-25 men's teams. In addition, 23 of the nation's top-ranked athletes will be in the field including Oklahoma's Ronnie Ash who is No. 1 nationally in the men's 110-meter hurdles.
