NORMAN, Okla. — Oklahoma sophomore Brittany Borman was named the Big 12 Track and Field Athlete of the Week for the second time this outdoor season the Big 12 Conference announced Tuesday. The honor comes after Borman won titles in both the javelin and discus at last week's Sooner Invitational. With the honor, Borman becomes just the second female throws athlete in Big 12 history to earn multiple Athlete of the Week honors in the same season.
The announcement also gave the Oklahoma women's team its fourth Big 12 Athlete of the Week distinction in the six first weeks of the outdoor season, tying Texas Tech (2008) and Kansas State (2002) for the Big 12 record for most female honors in a season.
In first javelin action of the season on Friday, Borman unleashed a throw of 171-10 (52.38) to win the event by over 14 feet and break the meet record by over four feet. The throw is the second longest in OU history and is just four inches off the program record held by current Sooner Amy Backel.
Borman followed Friday's win with the discus title on Saturday, launching the implement a distance of 177-5 (54.08) to win the distance by over 10 feet. The win gave Borman, who is currently the nation's top-ranked athlete in the event, her third discus title of the season and fifth overall title.
The sophomore had previously won the honor on April 13 after winning the discus at the North Texas Spring Classic with the nation's top throw.
