NORMAN, Okla. -- Despite the windy conditions affecting the track, Oklahoma athletes picked up seven individual titles Saturday at the Sooner Invitational along with one meet record. Latoya Greaves (100-meter hurdles), Ronnie Ash (110-meter hurdles), Eric Bailey (400-meter hurdles), Tia Brooks (shot put), Brittany Borman (discus), Claire McConnell (heptathlon) and Bobby Nicolls (1,500-meter run) each claimed wins at the John Jacobs Track and Field Complex. The seven wins gives OU nine titles for the weekend after Borman (javelin) and K.P. Singh (hammer throw) won titles Friday afternoon. The finish comes one week after the program earned seven titles on the home track in the John Jacobs Invitational.
Greaves broke the meet record with a win in the women's 100-meter hurdles as she recorded a time of 13.10. The finish gave Greaves, already the OU record holder in the event, her third win of the 2010 outdoor season as she surpassed the previous meet record of 13.34 set in 2009. The time moves Greaves up to sixth in the nation and fourth among Big 12 athletes.
Ash kept his undefeated season alive as he easily won the men's 110-meter hurdles with a time of 13.58. The time is Ash's second fastest of the season as he entered the meet with a nation's leading mark of 13.50. The win is Ash's fourth of the season.
The wins gave Ash and Greaves their second short hurdles sweep of the season after doing so at the Sun Angel Track Classic on April 10.
The throws ring saw Brooks claim her first title of the outdoor season with a personal best as she dueled with teammate Karen Shump as the duo finished one-two in the event. Brooks' winning throw of 54-9.25 (16.69) came on her fifth attempt as she overcame Shump's 53-0.25 (16.16). The PR moves Brooks up to second on the all-time OU performance list behind the current record holder, Shump. Amy Backel finished fourth in the event with a top throw of 52-5.50 (15.99).
A teammate of Brooks and Shump, Brittany Borman claimed her second title of the weekend as she won the discus after winning the javelin on Friday. Borman's throw of 177-5 (54.08) gave the sophomore her third discus title and fifth overall title of the season. Shump finished third in the event with a throw of 164-8 (50.20).
The longer version of the hurdles saw OU claim a title as well as Bailey picked up his third title of the season in the event with a time of 51.78. Running into the wind on the final turn, Bailey held off the field as Zach Dawson was fifth in 53.07.
In the first multi-event competition of the season, McConnell won the women's heptathlon with a total of 4,598 points. The total is the seventh best in Oklahoma history and third best during the Martin Smith era.
Nicolls won his first outdoor title of his collegiate career as the freshman clocked a time of 4:00.58 in the men's 1,500-meter run. In a race double the length, Oklahoma's Ross Larimer, competing unattached, won the men's 3,000-meter run with a time of 8:46.16, edging South Plains' Tallam Kipruto at line by a tenth of a second.
Scottesha Miller ran a season-best time of 11.30 in the 100-meter dash as she finished second in the event. Miller's time was actually under the meet record of 11.66 which she set in 2008 as Texas Tech's Terra Evans won the event with a time of 11.28. With the result, Miller continues to hold the No. 4 position in the Big 12 and moves up to No. 8 in the nation.
Both men's and women's 4x100-meter relays finished second on the day as the quartet of Sherine Wells, Greaves, Jasmine Simmons and Miller clocked a time of 44.94. On the men's side, Malcolm Anderson, Mookie Salaam, Remuro Henry and Evan Pierson clocked a time of 40.32.
