NORMAN, Okla. — Brittany Borman claimed her fourth individual title of the season and K.P. Singh won his third Friday in the first of two days of competition at the Sooner Invitational. Borman easily won the women's javelin by over 14 feet while Singh claimed his second consecutive hammer throw title on his home turf.
Borman's winning throw of 171-10 on her second attempt ranks second in Oklahoma history and ties for fifth longest in the NCAA this season. The mark is just four inches off of current Sooner Amy Backel's program record of 172-2. The win gives Borman her fourth title of the season among three events. Borman had previously claimed two discus titles and one shot put title earlier in the season.
Already the program record holder in the men's weight throw, Singh recorded his second-longest throw of the season, 208-4 (63.50), to win the event by over 12 feet. Friday's win is Singh's third title of the season and his second in as many weeks after winning the event at last week's John Jacobs Invitational in Norman.
In his first action of the season, Mark Costello finished third in the javelin with a personal best throw of 213-6 (65.07). Costello's throw is the third best in Oklahoma history and tops his previous best by over 11 feet. Freshman Justin Shirk, who holds the second longest throw in program history, finished fourth in the event with a throw of 206-10 (63.04).
With four events completed and three remaining in the women's heptathlon, OU's Claire McConnell sits in the lead with 2,847 points followed by teammate Natasha Kotey in second with 2,376 points.
The heptathlon opened with the 100-meter hurdles where OU athletes finished in the top three spots. McConnell ran a season best of 15.12 to lead the field. Kotey was second in 15.24 followed by Taylor Wyatt at 15.77,
Following the hurdles, the group moved to the high jump where OU's Charlotte Abrahamsen topped all competitors by clearing the bar at 5-7.00 (1.70). McConnell tied for second at 5-1.00 (1.55). Abrahamsen and McConnell made it two straight in the one-two finishes as they claimed the top two spots in the shot put of the heptathlon. Abrahamsen threw a distance of 43-6.50 (13.27) while McConnell recorded a throw of 34-2.75 (10.43).
Saturday action begins at 10 a.m. with the long jump for the women's heptathlon. Running events kick off at 1:30 p.m. with the women's 4x100-meter relay. Admission to the event at the John Jacobs Track and Field Complex is free.
