NORMAN, Okla. — Fresh off the program's first Big 12 Indoor Championship, the University of Oklahoma men's track and field program continued to collect awards as head coach Martin Smith was named the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Midwest Regional Coach of the Year and Ronnie Ash the USTFCCCA Midwest Regional Track Athlete of the Year Tuesday.
For Smith, it was the second such honor this season after being named the Big 12 men's Coach of the Year following the Big 12 title win, OU's first Big 12 indoor title and first indoor conference title since 1960. Tuesday's honor marks the second time that Smith has been named Midwest Region Coach of the Year after receiving the outdoor award in 2007. Smith's men's team is currently ranked first in the Midwest region and has six athletes in the nation's top ten in their respective events and qualified seven for the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Ash receives the honor three days before attempting to defend his 2009 NCAA 60-meter hurdles title and just over a week after claiming the 2010 Big 12 title in the event. Ash is currently ranked first in the nation in event after breaking the Oklahoma record in the event with a time of 7.59. Ash's time also ranks sixth among all Americans in 2010.
