NORMAN, Okla. — Athletes from the Oklahoma Track and Field program will split this weekend to three different locations across the nation for NCAA Last Chance Qualifiers in hopes of securing a time or mark for entry to the NCAA Indoor Championships. Athletes who hit NCAA automatic qualifying marks will be added to the NCAA field while athletes who wish to be added without an automatic mark must record an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. The NCAA allows a maximum of 284 athletes in both the men's and women's fields with a minimum field of 14 entries in each individual event and 10 entries in each relay event.
A group of Oklahoma men, competing both individually and on relays, will be in South Bend, Ind., for the two-day Alex Wilson Invitational beginning Friday. Both OU relays entered in the event, the 4x400-meter relay and the distance medley relay, rank in the nation's top 10 with the 4x4 at No. 8 with a time of 3:07.76 and the DMR at No. 10 at 9:43.36.
Individually, Zach Dawson will run the 400-meter dash while Scott Cooper is slated to run in the 800-meter run. Both Ross Larimer and Alex Muntefering are entered in the men's mile.
Five athletes will be in action Friday at the Arkansas Last Chance Qualifier in Fayetteville, Ark. Triple jumper Jasmine Simmons and Amy Backel, competing in the shot put, have both already hit NCAA provisional qualifying marks and will attempt to post better marks in their respective events.
Simmons is currently 13th nationally in the triple jump with a provisional qualifying mark of 42-11.50 (13.09) while is Backel is 24th in the shot put with a season-best throw of 52-4.00 (15.95). Pole vaulters Jacy Bennett, Sarah Pappas and Jonathan Webb will also be in action at the meet.
For the second year in a row, members of the women's sprints group will be in Blacksburg, Va., for the Virginia Tech Last Chance Qualifier on Saturday. Latoya Greaves will compete in the 60-meter hurdles while freshman Marlena Wesh will take to the track in the 200- and 400-meter dash. Both Greaves and Wesh enter the meet with NCAA provisional qualifying marks.
