Singh Breaks OU Hammer Throw Record

ARLINGTON, Texas — K.P. Singh became the third Sooner of the weekend to break an OU program record as he won the hammer throw title Saturday at the Bobby Lane Invitational in Arlington. Singh was one of three Sooners to win event titles Saturday as he was joined by Ronnie Ash (60-meter hurdles) and Eric Bailey (400-meter hurdles) in claiming event wins.

Singh easily won the hammer throw as he topped the second-place finisher by close to 15 feet with a throw of 202-4 (61.67). Iowa State's Zack Richards was second with a throw of 187-6 (57.16). Singh's toss eclipsed the previous OU record of 196-11 (60.02) set by Buck Sullivan in 2008.

Fresh off his NCAA 60-meter hurdles title in the indoor season, Ash claimed the 110-meter hurdles title in his first outdoor action of the 2010 season with a time of 13.80. Ash, who's performance is the seventh best in OU history, easily bettered the field as TCU's Jordan Pitts was second with a time of 14.27. Ash's teammate D'Andre Fisher was third in the event with a time of 14.29.

Bailey followed Ash's lead in the hurdles as he won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 51.69. Bailey was joined in the top four by teammate Zach Dawson, who finished fourth with a time of 54.04.

The defending Big 12 champion in the discus, Luke Bryant finished second overall and first among collegiate competitors Saturday with a top throw of 174-3 (53.12). Bryant was joined by Colin Quirke (169-9/51.76) and Singh (162-8/49.49) in the top five as the duo finished fourth and fifth, respecitvely.

The women's javelin saw sophomore Katelyn Penner unleash a PR of 158-7 (48.35) as she finished second in the event. Penner's throw is the second longest in program history behind the OU record of 171-10 (52.39) set by current Sooner Amy Backel in 2008.

The throws third second-place finish of the day came in the shot put as Tia Brooks finished second in the event with a throw of 52-10.75 (16.12), the third longest in program history. The redshirt-freshman was joined in the top three by classmate Karen Shump who was third with a toss of 52-7.50 (16.04).

Brittany Borman was second in the discus and moved into third all-time at OU in the women's discus with a throw of 165-4 (50.39). Shump finished fourth with a distance of 158-3 (48.25).

Alex Madkins finished second in the men's long jump with a throw of 24-8.25 (7.52). Madkins was one of two Sooners in the top four as Neelon Greenwood was fourth with a top jump of 23-8.75 (7.23).

Chenale Smith took second in the women's high jump as the freshman cleared the bar at 5-6.00 (1.68).

Mookie Salaam was third overall and second among collegiate competitors in the 100-meter dash as the sophmore covered the straight line in a time of 10.50.
