NORMAN, Okla. — Oklahoma senior Amy Backel was named the Big 12 Track and Field Athlete of the week the conference announced Tuesday after the senior won the javelin title at the outdoor season-opening Tulsa Duels Friday. Backel's winning throw of 168-3 (51.28) outdistanced the rest of the field by over eight feet and currently ranks fourth nationally.

Already the OU record holder in the event, Backel returns to the javelin after being sidelined from the event in 2009 with an elbow injury. Backel earned All-America honors in 2008 after finishing seventh at the NCAA Championships. The Dillsburg, Pa., native followed up the performance by finishing 10th at the U.S. Olympic Trials that summer.

Backel and the rest of the Sooners return to action this weekend with a number of meets. OU athletes will be in action at four different locations ranging from Fayetteville, Arkansas to Palo Alto, Calif.
