AMES, Iowa -- The Oklahoma Track and Field program is in Ames, Iowa this weekend for the beginning of post-season action as it participates in the 2010 Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships Friday and Saturday. The two-day event held inside the Leid Recreation Athletic Facility features all 12 conference programs and begins Friday at 10 a.m. with the women's pentathlon.
The Oklahoma men enter the meet ranked 12th nationally, fifth best among Big 12 programs, while the women are 15th, third among Big 12 schools. The two teams will be looking to improve on their finishes in the 2009 Big 12 Championships where the men finished fifth and the women sixth. The two teams combined to claim 38 All-Big 12 honors.
Ti'Anca Mock enters the meet as the lone defending Big 12 indoor champion after claiming the long jump title in 2009. Mock currently sits fourth in the Big 12 with a top jump of 20-4.50 (6.21). Mock is one of two jumpers ranked highly for the women's program as Jasmine Simmons sits second in the triple jump entering the competition.
A second OU athlete enters the meet with a Big 12 indoor title to her name as Latoya Greaves competes in the women's 60-meter hurdles, having won the event's conference crown in 2008 before sitting out the 2009 season. Like Mock, Greaves enters the meet ranked No. 4 in her event.
The 2009 NCAA champion in the 60-meter hurdles, Ronnie Ash arrived at Oklahoma in Norman and quickly made a name for himself in the Big 12 as he enters the meet as the conference's top-ranked athlete in the event. Ash is joined by teammate Malcolm Anderson as a favorite in the event as Anderson is fourth in the Big 12.
Runners in the mile and 3,000-meter run will provide the Oklahoma coaching staff with a number of options as both events have three runners ranked in the top seven in the conference. Jacob Boone and Eric Harasyn are ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the men's mile as the only Big 12 athletes to run a sub-four minute mile this season. Rob Sorrell is ranked No. 7 in the mile but is also ranked No. 2 in the 3,000-meter run. He is joined in the 3,000-meter rankings by Kevin Williams at No. 4 and Kevin Schwab at No. 6.
Fresh off being named the Big 12 Athlete of the Week K.P. Singh, enters the weekend as the No. 1 weight thrower in the Big 12. Singh broke his own Oklahoma record at last week's Sooner Open with a throw of 69-0.00 (21.03) and leads the Big 12 by over a foot as Nebraska's Brett Suckstorf is second with a top throw of 67-2.25 (20.48).
The shot put has a chance to provide OU with some valuable points on the women's side as four Oklahoma throwers are ranked in the top 10, three of which are in the top four. Redshirt-freshman and OU record holder Karen Shump leads the group as the Big 12's No. 1 athlete in the event. She's joined by classmate Tia Brooks at No. 2 while senior Amy Backel is No. 4 as all three have hit NCAA provisional qualifying marks this season. Brittany Borman rounds out the group at No. 9 in the event rankings.
As the throwers are expected to contribute for Oklahoma women, Scottesha Miller will be expected to in the sprints. The Daytona Beach, Fla., native enters the meet with the No. 2 Big 12 ranking and No. 3 national ranking in the 200-meter dash while she is No. 4 in the 60-meter dash. Miller is one of two OU athletes with a top-10 ranking in the 60 as Sherine Wells is No. 6.
