NORMAN, Okla. — Oklahoma's Ronnie Ash has been named the Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week the conference announced Tuesday afternoon. The honor comes following a weekend that saw the junior break the OU record in the 60-meter hurdles and punch a ticket to the NCAA Indoor Championships with an NCAA automatic qualifying mark.
Ash won the 60-meter hurdles at the Tyson Invitational with a time of 7.69, the second-fastest time in the nation and the best in the Big 12. The time bettered the previous OU record of 7.73 set by Sheldon Leith in 2008. In last weekend's event, Ash beat six of the top 10 runners nationally and recorded an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 7.77 to lead all collegiate athletes in the prelims of the event.
Ash's honor is the second Big 12 Athlete of the Week earned by an OU athlete this season after sprinter Scottesha Miller did so on Jan. 12.
