NORMAN, Okla. - University of Oklahoma junior Ellen Mueller won the 2009 Women's Oklahoma Golf Association Stroke Play Championship title this week, while incoming OU freshman Aly Seng placed in second. The tournament was held Monday and Tuesday at the par-70 Stillwater Country Club.
Mueller, originally from Evansville, Ind., made her way to the top of the leaderboard after the first round Monday by firing a one-over 71. Meanwhile, Seng carded a four-over 74 to stand in a tie for fourth place.
The pair shot matching three-over 73's on Tuesday, giving Mueller the victory with a two-round score of 144 (+4) and Seng second place with a 147 (+7).
"Stillwater Country club required precision shots," Mueller said after the win. "I stuck to my game plan and tried to be patient. I knew that if I kept hitting fairways and greens, the putts would eventually fall."
Seng, who is from Enid, Okla., said she was glad to finish in second behind Mueller.
"I played pretty solid and if I couldn't win I was happy for Ellen that she did," Seng said. "I came up a little short, but I thought I played solid both days. I'm excited to get to Norman and start the season with the team."
Mueller said that the victory came after a summer of hard work on her own game and will give her momentum for the 2009 U.S. Women's Amateur, to be held Aug. 3-9 at Old Warson Country Club in St. Louis, Mo.
"For a while now I could tell my game was on the verge of turning around," Mueller said. "I feel that this week reflected all the hard work I have put into my game this summer. I feel very confident going into the U.S. Amateur. Old Warson sets up to my style of play."
