NORMAN, Okla. -- Oklahoma junior Amy Backel upped the program's number of entries to 12 for next week's NCAA Track and Field Championships when she was added as an at-large competitor Friday in the women's shot put. The junior earned her second consecutive at-large bid for the NCAAs after finishing sixth, one spot out of the automatic qualifying cut line, in the shot put at the NCAA Midwest Regional in Norman.
Backel was named an at-large competitor in the javelin in 2008 and responded by earning Oklahoma's first ever All-America honor in the event. The Dillsburg, Pa., native was unable to compete this year in the javelin after suffering an elbow injury earlier in the year.
Backel is OU's fourth at-large competitor joining Will Claye (long jump), Scottesha Miller (100-meter dash) and Mookie Salaam (100-meter dash). The previous three had already automatically qualified in other events before earning at-large entries as well.
