LUBBOCK, Texas — The University of Oklahoma Track and Field program is in Lubbock, Texas for the 2009 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships this weekend at the Terry and Linda Fuller Track Complex. The Sooners enter competition with three OU athletes holding the top ranking in the Big 12 as Luke Bryant (discus), Will Claye (triple jump) and Ti'Anca Mock (long jump) hold down the top conference spots.
The Big 12 Championships will be tightly contested as the conference has six teams in both the men's and women's top 25. Mock will look to pick up a season sweep in the long jump after winning the indoor event with a jump of 20-7.25 (6.28). In all, OU athletes earned 38 All-Big 12 honors at the indoor meet as the men finished fifth and the women sixth. The Sooners will look to improve on their 2008 finish in the outdoor event where the women took sixth and the men seventh. OU athletes broke five program records in the process along with claiming 10 top-three finishes including two titles.
OU women's track and field team jumped to No. 19 in the latest national ranking provided by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). The women were bolstered by the performance of Mock in the long jump who debuted in the national rankings at No. 2 after breaking a 15-year old program record in the event with a jump of 21-9.50 (6.64) at last Saturday's Sooner Twilight.
