Trip to Oregon Leads to NCAA Marks

EUGENE, Ore. — The University of Oklahoma Track and Field program added four more NCAA Regional qualifying time Saturday at the Oregon Relays in Eugene. Tony Clement (1,500-meter run), Scott Cooper (800-meter run), Rob Sorrell (1,500-meter run) and Kelly Waters (5,000-meter run) all added their names to the list of athletes qualified to compete in the 2009 NCAA Midwest Regional, May 29-30, in Norman.

Clement claimed the event title in the second section of the 1,500-meter run with a regional qualifying time of 3:47.06. The time is the eighth fastest in program history and is also the second time this season Clement has run a regional qualifying time in the west after doing so on April 11, 3:47.30, in Tempe, Ariz.

Waters finished third overall and second among collegiate competitors in the 5,000 with a regional qualifying time of 16:40.54, over 10 seconds faster than the regional qualifying cutoff time of 16:52. Waters' time also ranks sixth all-time in OU history.

The men's 800-meter run saw two Sooners clock personal best times as Scott Cooper (1:48.87) and Chris Sweeney (1:51.67) each accomplished the feat to finish fourth and eighth respectively. Cooper eclipsed the regional qualifying time and moved to No. 4 in the Big 12 Conference with the performance, the eighth fastest in Oklahoma history.

Also running a regional qualifying mark in the men's 1,500-meter run was Rob Sorrell who recorded a time of 3:47.41 in the event to finish seventh overall.
