TEMPE, Ariz. — A small group of five men's distance runners combined for big results late Saturday night at the Sun Angel Track Classic on the campus of Arizona State University. The five earned four NCAA Regional qualifying marks needed to compete in the NCAA Midwest Regional, May 29-30, in Norman as Scott Cooper claimed a title in the men's 800-meter run.
Cooper claimed top honors in the 800 with an outdoor personal-best of 1:49.71. The ninth fastest time in program history, Cooper's time moves the sophomore to No. 3 in the Big 12 Conference. Cooper's teammate, Chris Sweeney, finished 16th in the event with a time of 1:51.98. Both runners were in the fifth and final heat that saw Cooper take over the lead coming out of the final turn and unleashing a kick that left the rest of the field in his wake.
A longer race saw the same result as far as the Big 12 standings are concerned as Jacob Boone moved up to third in the conference standings in the 1,500-meter run while Rob Sorrell positioned himself at No. 4 with their performance on a rain-slicked track in the premiere event Saturday night. The two held towards the back of the pack to set themselves up for a sprint to the finish. Boone took sixth overall with a regional qualifying time of 3:44.28 while Sorrell was 11th with a regional qualifying time of 3:47.17.
Different heat, same result as junior Tony Clement recorded a regional qualifying mark in the B section of the men's 1,500-meter run. Clement's regional qualifying time of 3:47.30 is the eighth fastest in program history and was the fifth fastest in the B section of the men's 1,500-meter run.
