NORMAN, Okla. — University of Oklahoma track and field athletes will be spread out to three locations across the U.S. this weekend in their final opportunity to qualify for the 2009 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. OU will be represented in NCAA Last Chance Qualifiers in Blacksburg, Va., and Ames, Iowa, along with the Alex Wilson Invitational in South Bend, Ind., as the athletes attempt to record high enough marks for entry in the NCAA Championships.
Athletes are automatically selected for inclusion with an NCAA automatic qualifying mark or they must hit an NCAA provisional qualifying mark to be considered as an at-large selection. Individual events have a minimum field of 14 competitors while relay events have a minimum field of 10 relays.
The men's distance medley relay of Rob Sorrell, Jarell Warren, Scott Cooper and Jacob Boone kick things off Friday night at the Alex Wilson Invitational in South Bend. The relay will attempt to improve on its No. 10 national ranking with a provisional mark of 9:42.43 run on Feb. 14 at the Tyson Invitational. The time is the second fastest in Oklahoma program history. Tony Clement, who has run the first leg the majority of the season including the provisional time, and Chris Sweeney will also compete at the meet in individual action.

After competing in Friday night's DMR, Warren will board a flight to Iowa where he will meet up with Eric Bailey, Zach Dawson and Mookie Salaam to compose the men's 4x400-meter relay at the Iowa State Last Chance Qualifier in Ames, Iowa. The four currently have the 23rd fastest time in the nation, clocking in at 3:09.81. Of the 22 times ahead of the mark, seven are by programs with multiple times submitted enabling Oklahoma to slide up to No. 16 in the national rankings.
Salaam will run in the 60- and 200-meter dash, both events he has recorded NCAA provisional qualifying marks in. Salaam enters the weekend ranked No. 18 nationally in the 200 with a time of 21.04 and No. 37 in the 60 with a time of 6.73.
Action in Iowa is not limited to the track as sophomore K.P. Singh will attempt to extend his own OU program record in the weight throw and qualify for the NCAA Championships. Singh holds the Oklahoma record with a toss of 67-0.50 (20.43), a distance that ranks No. 17 in the nation.
Two OU women, Latoya Heath and Scottesha Miller, will head to the Virginia Tech campus for its NCAA Last Chance Qualifier on Saturday. Heath will see action in the 60-meter hurdles while Miller will be a part of the field in both the 60-meter dash and the long jump. Heath enters the weekend ranked No. 27 in the nation with a personal-best time of 8.36.
Miller will look to improve in the 60 where she is currently ranked No. 18 with a personal-best time of 7.37. Miller also has a personal best this season in the indoor long jump with a distance of 20-4.50 (6.21), a jump that ranks 28th in the nation.
The 2009 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships will be held March 13-14 at College Station, Texas in the Gilliam Indoor Stadium.
