TULSA, Okla. -- Mikaela Johansson headlined Oklahoma Track and Field action Saturday at the Tulsa Duals by shattering the program record in the women's hammer throw with a throw of 188 feet and one inch (57.34 meters). The regional qualifying throw easily eclipsed the previous record of 162-2 (49.42) set by Katie Webster in 1998. Johansson was one of three Sooner throwers to pick up NCAA Regional qualifying distances as Luke Bryant (discus) and Mark Costello (javelin) each picked up marks needed for the NCAA Midwest Regional in Norman, May 29-30.
Johansson finished second in the event behind the defending Big 12 champion, Kansas State's Loren Groves, who won the event with a throw of 204-0 (62.17).
On the men's side, Buck Sullivan claimed the men's hammer throw title after finishing second in 2008. Sullivan, the program record holder in the event, bested all comers with a top throw of 179-11 (54.85), defeating Kansas State's Nate Brummet (169-2/51.57) by over 10 feet.

A redshirt-freshman transfer from Arizona, Bryant picked up a win in the discus in his first competition as a Sooner. Bryant's regional qualifying throw of 186-7 (56.87) was more than eight feet further than his closest competitor in Floyd Turner's 178-1 (54.27). Bryant's throw is the fourth best in Oklahoma history and the best since Kevin Bookout's 186-10 (56.95) in 2007.
Costello led the way in the javelin as all three OU competitors recorded marks that fall in the top five performances in program history. In his first action as a Sooner, the Clearwater, Kan., native took second with a regional qualifying and personal best toss of 202-1 (61.61). Junior Gary Jeffrey was fourth in the event with a throw of 196-10 (60.01) while another freshman, Ben Latham, was sixth with a throw of 193-8 (59.04).
