AUSTIN, Texas — Oklahoma action Thursday at the 82nd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin was contained to the throws ring where hammer throwers Mikaela Johansson and Buck Sullivan each eclipsed the NCAA Regional qualifying standard in the event. Each finished eighth in their respective divisions as Johansson extended her own program record by eight inches with a heave of 188 feet and nine inches (57.57 meters). Both recorded their best efforts on their sixth and final throws of the competition.
Johansson first shattered the program record in her OU outdoor debut two weeks ago at the Tulsa Duals. A former Southland Conference champion in the event while at Southeastern Louisiana, Johansson tossed the implement a regional qualifying distance of 188-1 (57.34) in Tulsa to easily eclipse the previous record of 162-2 (49.42) set by Katie Webster in 1998.
Sullivan, who holds the men's program record in the event, tossed the implement a season-best distance of 190-8 (58.12) to moved into third on the Big 12 Conference performance list. Sullivan holds the Oklahoma record with a throw of 195-6 (59.60) in 2008.
OU action at the prestigious event on Friday begins at 9:30 a.m. with the preliminary rounds of the women's 4x100-meter relay. All four Sooners who ran on the relay that took third at last year's Big 12 Championships return for their outdoor relay debut on Friday.
