BOSTON — Oklahoma freshman Karen Shump finished third in the women's shot put at the opening day of the 2009 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships in the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center in Boston. The Media, Pa., native tossed the shot a distance of 56 feet and 7.50 inches (17.26 meters) to record the highest finish by a collegiate athlete.

That throw is the second-longest this year by a collegiate athlete behind Arizona State's Sarah Stevens with a throw of 57-7.75 (17.57). Jillian Camarena of the New York Athletic Club won the competition with a throw of 61-0.00 (18.59).
OU alum Toni Smith took fourth in the women's triple jump Saturday. The Oklahoma record holder in the event, Smith leapt a distance of 43-7.00 (13.28) on her sixth and final jump of the event. Shakeema Welsch won the event with a jump of 45-2.25 (13.77).
Another OU alum, Frankie Wright, was eliminated in the semifinals of the men's 400-meter dash. The former NCAA All-American finished eighth with a time of 47.88, just missing the finals cut of 47.62.
