OU Alums Head to USA Indoor Championships

Big 12 Titles on the Line

NORMAN, OKLA. -- Postseason action for the University of Oklahoma Indoor Track and Field program begins this weekend in College Station, Texas with the 2009 Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships.

The meet contested in Texas A&M's Gilliam Indoor Stadium will feature the No. 9 OU men's team taking on seven teams in the top 25, including five in the top 10, and the OU women battling six top-25 teams.

The Sooner men held steady at No. 9 in the national rankings for the second straight week. The eight Big 12 men's teams and six women's teams in the top 25 are both nation's best.

Oklahoma has one defending Big 12 champion in triple jumper Shardae Boutte who also claimed the title in the outdoor meet.

In 2008, the OU men finished sixth at the indoor conference meet while the women took seventh.

Action kicks off Friday at 11 a.m. OU action will begin at 2 p.m. with the prelims of the 60-meter dash. Saturday action at the meet begins at 3 p.m.

Sooner to Watch
Defending Big 12 triple jump champion Shardae Boutte enters the weekend as the No. 2 triple jumper in the nation with goals of repeating in 2009. Boutte, along with freshman teammate Will Claye, will battle a trio of Texas A&M triple jumpers competing on their home turf for conference supremacy. Boutte and Claye have work to do with Boutte recently boasting in a TrackShark.com video "It's either going to be me or Will at Big 12."

NCAA QUALIFIERS
With three weeks of action remaining, Oklahoma athletes have posted 19 provisional qualifying marks and five automatic qualifying marks.

Long jumper Ti'Anca Mock recorded the Sooners first automatic qualifying mark with a distance of 20-11.75 (6.39) in the event at the Razorback Invitational on Jan. 24.

One week later Mock was joined on the list by triple jumper Shardae Boutte when he eclipsed the mark with a top jump of 53-0.25 (16.16) at the J.D. Martin Invitational on Jan. 31.

Feb. 7 saw two Oklahoma athletes add their names to the automatic list with OU records as Leslie Cole did so in the 400-meter dash (52.33) followed by Jacob Boone in the men's mile  (3:59.07).

The latest came on Feb. 14 as Will Claye added his name to the automatic list with a 53-5.50 (16.29) triple jump. Boutte increased his distance the same day with a new mark of 53-5.75 (16.30).
