BEIJING, China — Former University of Oklahoma athlete Danny McFarlance continued his quest for a second consecutive Olympic medal by advancing to the finals of the men's 400-meter hurdles Saturday morning at the Olympic Games in Beijing.
The silver medalist in the 2004 Athens Games, McFarlane finished second in the second of two heats with a season-best time of 48.33. USA's Kerron Clement took first in the heat with a time of 48.27.
Two other American runners grabbed the top-two seeds in Monday's final scheduled for 9 a.m. CST. Angelo Taylor (47.94) and Bershawn Jackson (48.02) both recorded season-best times in the event's first heat. McFarlane will be joined by the Americans and fellow countryman Markino Buckley (48.50) in the final along with South Africa's L.J. Van Zyl (48.57), Greece's Periklis Iakovakis (48.69) and Poland's Marek Plawgo (48.75).
McFarlane entered this year's games as the No. 5 athlete in the world with a time of 48.39. Clement came into the Games as the world's top-ranked athlete in the event with a time of 47.79.
Another OU alum's quest for Olympic glory took a hit Saturday morning as Laverne Jones-Ferrette was eliminated in the women's 100-meter dash. Jones-Ferrette finished fifth in the second round's first heat with a time of 11.55. Jamaica's Kerron Stewart ran the round's fastest time in 10.98.
Jones-Ferrette will now turn her attention to the 200-meter dash, beginning Monday night.
